Fall Permaculture Practices for a Successful Spring Garden

Permaculture is a sustainable and natural approach to agriculture that integrates nature and society. Join Michael & Jennifer in this afternoon workshop that will introduce you to the principles that allowed them to turn their 2/3 acre lot into an urban homestead that produces more than half the food for their family. The workshop will offer a generous mix of philosophy and methodology. Participants will be introduced to the basics of permaculture; mulching, co-planting, natural pest control, chemical free fertilization, and designing a food forest. You will gain the knowledge to plant your fall crops and prepare your spring beds now for a successful garden in the coming year.Rainbow

We will offer you a sampling of our perennial plants to take home for your own gardens and then we will cap off the day with a variety of fresh snacks and hot coffee.

What to bring: Garden shoes, warm farming clothes, gloves, re-fillable water bottle. This workshop is limited to 10 attendees.

Some of our favorite things

Here is a short list of vendors we have found to be extremely helpful in our homesteading attempts. Enjoy!

Omlet  This is the chicken coop we started with. A fully enclosed, plastic (read easily cleanable!) double insulated, varmint proof chicken coop. We love ours! We quickly outgrew it because we have more than 4 chickens now but we use it as a brooder for new hens each year. we just love it.IMG_20140717_181948

AZ Apiaries For the Love of Bees Bees, supplies, hives and most important successful experience! Right here in Connecticut! It’s nice to have someone local so when you catch a swarm of bees like this you have somewhere to put them!

Blue Sky Bee Supply  An online Beekeeping resource that we lean on regularly. Owned and operated by the family of my dear friend Heather.

Shelter Logic  On our little urban homestead we needed a sturdy, legal and relaible shelter for our rabbits.  This company shipped it right to the house and my husband and son assembled it in two days!20150712_164616

My Pet Chicken A wonderful resource, also right here in Connecticut, for the Backyard Chicken.  Everything from brooding lights to chickens!  We have had great success with everything we have ever purchased here, even our little peeping chicks that come in the mail! Nothing better than getting a phone call from the post office at 5:45am in the morning! You should get backyard chickens. Here is why.

Those Jersey Girls…

One of the absolute BEST things we did last year was purchase a CSA share from our local raw dairy farm Deerfield Farm.  Every Wednesday we would argue over who would get to go pick up our milk, yogurt and soft cheese.  Mainly because we loved to hang out with cows.

IMG_20140723_154318These girls are real special.  They are loved, have a clean place to live, and see all that green behind them? They get to eat that ALLLL day!

So that means we get to bring home delicious raw milk that has an amazing cream line.

And we get all the health benefits of raw milk, plus the peace that comes with getting fresh air, listening to cows low and watch them frolic and play in the sunshine. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I cannot wait until it is milk CSA time again. It is coming up soon!
